BEDFORD, Pa. — A western Pennsylvania prosecutor plans to extradite a Maryland man on charges he fatally shot a male friend of the suspect's ex-wife.
Bedford County District Attorney William Higgins and the state police are not commenting on a motive in the shooting of 49-year-old Michael Simpson, who was found dead Sunday night by his 40-year-old girlfriend. Authorities say that woman is the ex-wife of 44-year-old Mark Shirey, of Allegany County, Md. The couple had four children together, but divorced about 10 years ago.
Authorities believe Shirey either broke into Simpson's house or followed him inside through an attached garage, and killed Simpson with a shotgun blast. Higgins says it could take up to three months to bring Shirey to Pennsylvania to face homicide and other charges. Online court records do not list an attorney for Shirey, who is jailed in Maryland.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
