Sheriff's Office releases more details on fatal shooting by deputy

The King County Sheriff's Office just released the following account of this weekend's fatal shooting of a man by a deputy:

A man was shot and killed by a sheriff's deputy after he and another deputy went to a domestic violence call in Woodinville on Saturday evening (July 4th).

The 911 call came in about 8:40 p.m. from a residence in the 16000 block of NE Woodinville-Duvall Road. Call receivers heard a woman screaming and crying the background. A man's voice could also be heard.

Shortly thereafter they heard the woman say "I need the police," and then an open phone line.

The first deputy arrived about five minutes after the call and spoke to the woman. She had injuries from an assault, and pointed out the suspect who by this time was walking away from the house.

The second deputy arrived a few minutes later.

The suspect returned to the area and sat down on the back porch of the house, holding a knife. He had apparent self-inflicted wounds on his arms. He was shot and killed shortly thereafter. The man was 59 years old.

The Sheriff's Office investigation is continuing.

In addition, there will be a Shooting Review Board to determine if the shooting was within Sheriff's Office police. The county executive will call for an Inquest as well.

The use of deadly force by police officers is addressed in the Revised Code of Washington under RCW 9A.16.040.

The name of the deputy, his age and time with the Sheriff's Office will not be released before Wednesday.
