Man kills mother of 2, self in W. Phila.




A woman who reportedly planned to take her children to Disney World today was shot and killed in West Philadelphia this morning by man who then took his own life with a bullet to the head, police said.

The woman, 40, was shot shortly before 5:30 a.m. in her black Toyota Camry, which crashed into a stone wall at the corner of Atwood Road and Lebanon Avenue in Overbrook.

A friend said the woman, who worked as a home health aide, was planning to take her son and daughter to Disney World today and that the gunman was an ex-boyfriend.

Police said the gunman, 36, shot the woman in the body before shooting himself in the head.

Both were taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. She was pronounced dead just before 6 a.m. He was pronounced at 6:20 a.m.

"She was good person," said neighbor Tanya Lawhorn.

She said the victim often traveled back and forth to New York to care for her parents there and that the trip to Disney World was a gift from her father.

A friend who asked not to be identified said the gunman had stalked the woman since she ended a relationship about a year ago.

The victim did not have a restraining order against her her ex-boyfried but planned to get one after returning from Disney World, the friend said.
