DENVER -- Six North Metro Fire Rescue District firefighters have received one of the highest awards in firefighting for their dramatic rescue of two children from a deadly fire in Northglenn in February.
The six received the Benjamin Franklin Fire Service Award for Valor from the International Association of Fire Chiefs. Those presented the award Friday were Battalion Chief Timothy Hanlon, Lt. John Maes, engineer firefighter Josh Deuto, and firefighters Josh Hamilton, John Brereton and Mark Maxwell.
After police busted through a barricaded door, the firefighters are credited with rescuing an 18-month-old boy and 5-year-old girl, as well as their father who police say severely beat the children's mother and started the blaze. The children's father, William Johnson, later died from his injuries.
