A Dalton man is facing arson, burglary and animal cruelty charges after he set a fire that damaged the apartment of his estranged wife and killed her two dogs, police said.
Cesar Fraire Carrillo, 22, turned himself in to Dalton police Monday morning in connection with an Oct. 11 fire at the apartment of his estranged wife, Maria Gomez. The Dalton Fire Department was called to an apartment fire on Heathcliff Drive shortly before 8:30 am on Oct. 11. Firefighters contained the fire and attempted CPR on two dogs that had been left inside, but they did not survive, authorities said.
Fire investigators determined that the blaze started when someone set fire to clothes belonging to Gomez's friend, Robert Garcia, that were hanging in a bedroom closet. Detectives said Gomez left the door unlocked that morning so that Garcia could return to the apartment. When Garcia arrived, he found the door locked. After using his key to get inside, he found the apartment full of smoke and he was unable to find the two dogs left inside. Garcia then called 911.
Detectives determined that Carrillo, who still hada key, had entered the apartment after Gomez left for work that morning, and set fire to Garcia’s clothes before Garcia returned to the apartment after his work shift.
