NEW ORLEANS – Police arrested a New Orleans man in connection with
the wounding of his estranged girlfriend and the fatal shooting of her
mother, according to the New Orleans Police Department.
Wednesday, Keith Phillips was booked on one count of attempted second
degree murder and one of count of second degree murder, according to
the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office. Phillips surrendered to police
around 11 a.m., according to a statement from the NOPD.
Just after 10 p.m. Monday, Renesha Nix, 25, and Phillips, 22, were involved in an argument in the 6800 block of Parc Brittany.
Nix called her mother to pick her up from the location to avoid a physical altercation with Phillips, police said.
Tiesha Nix, 40, arrived to pick up her daughter and observed the altercation, police said.
Without notice, Phillips turned to Tiesha Nix and shot her once in the head, which instantly killed her, the NOPD said.
Phillips then turned to Renesha Nix and shot her multiple times in the body, according to police.
Phillips then fled the area on foot, investigators said.
Tiesha Nix was pronounced dead on the scene and Renesha Nix was
transported to the hospital, where she is listed in critical condition.
Detectives were able to develop Phillips as the gunman in the
incident through witness participation and secured an arrest warrant for
second degree murder.
Phillips has been previously arrested for simple battery, domestic
violence, illegal carrying of weapons and suspended driver’s license.
