Riverside County, CA: Deputies fatally shoot Riverside County man after domestic violence call

Sheriff’s deputies fatally shot a man early Tuesday after he pointed a gun at them outside his southern Riverside County home, authorities said.

Deputies responded just before 1 a.m. to a report of domestic violence between a man and his girlfriend and shots fired inside a home in Anza, an unincorporated community near El Centro.

When deputies arrived they said they found a man sitting in a vehicle outside, holding a handgun to his head, according to a Sheriff’s Department news release.

After spending nearly an hour trying to persuade him to come out, deputies called in crisis negotiators. Before the team arrived, the man emerged from the vehicle and pointed the handgun at deputies, who opened fire, authorities said.

The man was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His identity has not been released.

No deputies were injured, and those involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave while it is under investigation.

A Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman would not identify the officers involved in the shooting, how many shots they fired or where the man was hit.
