HAYES, Va. (WAVY) - Gloucester County deputies responded to the scene of a what they're calling a murder, suicide in the 1800 block of Gloucester Road in Hayes, Virginia Sunday.
It was around 2 p.m. when officials say they got the initial call from a woman claiming her estranged husband, Keith Philip Ketch, had just shot her boyfriend.
Ali Ketch said she was hanging out with her boyfriend Jack McKinsey and her children. They were all swimming. She told WAVY.com her ex-husband showed up unexpectedly.
"We got the kids out of the pool and got them into the sun room," said Ketch. "Jack looked at me and he said he saw my ex-husband with a gun behind the fence. My ex-husband started running towards Jack with the gun and Jack told me to go. He told me to go and then he shot him."
Ketch and the kids ran into the home. Deputies say her ex-husband Keith Ketch followed them in.
"He pointed the gun at me and my son Hunter," Ketch added. "Hunter got in front of him and told him not to, so he backed off and then he took his own life."
Upon arrival, deputies were told the suspect had fled out the back door of the residence where another gunshot was heard. That's when deputies told the homeowner and children to break out a front window and escape.
Deputies cleared the backyard and determined the second gunshot heard was the suspect taking his own life, right next to the where the initial victim was shot.
"He just had a future," said McKinsey's mother Nancy Borbe. "They were looking forward to a future and now there is no future."
Both individuals were pronounced dead on the scene by medics with Abingdon Fire and Rescue who were staged nearby.
"You can't remember the good times when you're arranging funeral plans," Borbe added.
Ketch's vehicle was discovered behind the home, concealed by a privacy fence.
The investigation continues.
