Maxton, NC: Maxton man dies in jail

A Maxton man who faced misdemeanor domestic violence charges killed himself by hanging while in a medical jail cell at the Robeson County Detention Center on Sunday, according to Sheriff Kenneth Sealey.

Lesley Lynn McMillian, 37, of 412 Freeman Drive, used at bed sheet to hang himself, Sealey said.

A detention officer found McMillian at 10:48 a.m. during his regular checks, cut him down, and tried to revive him. Sealey said that McMillian was “alive and well” at 10:30 a.m. when he was last checked by detention officers.

Sealey said that five other inmates were in the cell block with McMillian. They will be questioned by the State Bureau of Investigation, which handles any case during which an individual dies while in custody.

There were no signs of foul play, according to the sheriff.

McMillian was in a medical jail cell because he had been in a car accident earlier that week and had stitches and an abrasion on his head. Sealey said that a doctor must clear an injured inmate before putting him in a regular cell. Medical cells are checked by detention officers every 15 minutes.

McMillian was arrested on Saturday and charged with violating a domestic violence protection order, domestic criminal trespassing, injury to personal property, and simple assault of a female.

“He showed no signs of suicide when he came in,” Sealey said.

McMillian even ate breakfast that morning, the sheriff said, and no suicide note was found.

This is the second suicide by an inmate at the jail since 2005. Victor McCormick, 23, of Lumberton, killed himself on Feb. 9, 2005, by hanging himself with his shoe laces while in a cell waiting to be processed. He was also facing misdemeanor domestic violence charges.
