SANTA ANA – A 36-year-old New York man will be sentenced Feb. 19 after he was convicted of first-degree murder for killing his girlfriend in Irvine in 2007.
It took a jury just an hour to find Javier Colon guilty of slashing his longtime girlfriend to death with a pair of scissors on the Fourth of July in 2007.
Colon and his girlfriend of 10 years, Janelle Peralta, had moved to Irvine from New York a week before the murder.
Police arrived at the Las Palmas apartment community near the corner of Jamboree Road and Irvine Boulevard around 9:30 p.m. to find Colon and Peralta drenched in blood in a bathroom.
The fight started when Colon wanted Peralta and their 1-year-old daughter to come to bed with him, Deputy District Attorney Jennifer Contini said in a press release. As it escalated, Peralta's mother grabbed the child and ran out of the apartment, screaming for neighbors to call 911, Contini said.
Colon locked himself and Peralta in the bathroom and tried to kill her and himself, Contini said.
When police broke down the bathroom door, they found Colon choking a bloody Peralta.
He had slit his throat and wrists and had slashed her 15 times, Contini said.
Colon survived after spending two days in the intensive care unit. Peralta died the next morning in the hospital.

We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
