Cordova, TN: Bond set on wife in plot to murder

A judge Wednesday set a $350,000 bond for a Cordova woman charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree murder in the November death of her husband.

Patricia Matting, 51, who is a postal worker, and her brother, James Smith, 47, of Milwaukee are accused in the shooting and beating death of Fredrick Matting at about 4:30 a.m. last Nov. 2 near the Matting home in the 9100 block of Ashton Grove.

Fredrick Matting, 51, was shot and wounded as he arrived home from work and then was chased, stabbed and had his skull fractured by the butt of a gun, said state prosecutor Neal Oldham.

His brother-in-law, Smith, was indicted in December and extradited to Memphis from Milwaukee in March.

He is being held on $1 million bond.

Defense attorney Joseph Ozment said the case against Patricia Matting is circumstantial and that her brother has said she did not know her husband was going to be killed.

Criminal Court Judge James Lammey Jr. set her bond after a short hearing.

No trial date has been set.
