HAMPTON — Brian Dunn says his mother never judged him, even when others did. His mom, Patricia Nobles McCarthy, was a selfless woman when it came to Dunn and his older brother — she was always in their corner.
That strong mother-son bond was tragically broken Thursday morning when police say she was killed by her husband during a murder-suicide.
"It was very disheartening," Dunn said of learning his mother had been killed by his step-father. "I felt like my joy had been taken away from me. She was my motivation to succeed in life….She was all I had in terms of people who supported me unconditionally. She was all I had."
Patricia Nobles McCarthy, 58, was returning to her home on Pear Avenue just after 6:30 a.m. when her husband, Tracy Andrew McCarthy, drove up in a white pickup truck and began shooting at her with a shotgun, according to Allison Quinones, a spokeswoman for the Hampton police department. After shooting and killing his wife, the 45-year-old Tracey McCarthy drove to Terminal Avenue in Newport News near I-664, got out of his car and walked a short distance before shooting and killing himself, police said.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
