GUYSVILLE, Ohio — An 83-year-old Athens County man faces murder charges stemming from the shooting death of his wife early Thursday morning.
According to the Athens County Sheriff's Office, David C. Tilley was arrested at his home on Mill School Road in Guysville after calling 911 and saying that his wife had been shot.
Responding deputies found Hope Tilley, 46, dead in a bedroom, 10TV's Ashleigh Barry reported.
"My wife had been shot, she's dead," Tilley told a 911 dispatcher.
He spent nearly 30 minutes on the phone with the dispatcher and waited for sheriff's deputies to arrive, Barry reported.
Tilley, who is wheelchair bound and an amputee, told the dispatcher that he dropped the gun and would meet officers at the front door.
Neighbors said they were surprised by the shooting.
"I knew something was up when I saw those vehicles there this morning and that yellow tape," said neighbor Danielle Marlow. "I thought it was David, something happened to David."
The Athens County Sheriff said they believe Tilley's wife was ill, but they have no motive for the slaying.
Moments before deputies arrived, Tilley was recorded whispering to his wife, "I did it for you."
Tilley was charged with murder, and was being held on a $50,000 bond.
