ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - A New Mexico man has been convicted in the slaying of his common-law wife who authorities say was beaten and had dirt shoved into her mouth.
Federal prosecutors say 26-year-old Nathan Don Jack, of Hogback, was found guilty Wednesday of second-degree murder after a 3-day trial. A sentencing date has yet to be set, but prosecutors say Jack is facing up to life in prison.
Jack was arrested on Aug. 9, 2009, after he brought Jessica Shorty to the emergency room of the Northern Navajo Medical Center. She was pronounced dead on arrival and doctors say her death was caused by asphyxia and severe, blunt-force trauma to her head.
Authorities say the 23-year-old Shorty was the mother of Jack's three children. Witnesses told investigators that Shorty was beaten by Jack after the couple had an argument outside their home.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
