MIAMI -- A former Marine from Jacksonville was shot and killed Monday in an exchange of gunfire outside a South Miami home.
Miami-Dade police said 50-year-old John Henry Purvis Jr. was pronounced dead at the scene and Amadeo Valls, 44, suffered at least one bullet wound.
Purvis' family told Channel 4 that the victim went to a home on the 6200 block of Southwest 79th Street to protect his ex-girlfriend from her new boyfriend.
Police said Valls was arrested at a home several blocks away and transported to a hospital, where he was in stable condition on Tuesday.
Valls was charged with first-degree murder.
