SAN ANTONIO -- A woman died after she was shot during an apparent murder-suicide attempt on the Far North Side Friday morning.
The shooting happened in the 25,300 block of Lost Arrow, in the Stone Oak area. Police said the 911 call came in as a man who shot another person, then himself. Police told News 4 WOAI Nicholas Rocky Maldonado shot his former girlfriend, 25-year-old Kristine Meza.
Investigators believe Maldonado showed up in the neighborhood around 5:00 a.m. and drove around until shortly before 8:00 a.m., when he parked his car so that it blocked the driveway at the home where Meza was living. Witnesses reported hearing a scream and several gunshots. It's believed Maldonado waited for Meza to come out of the house to leave for work and then shot her and turned the gun on himself.
Meza, who worked part-time and had applied to nursing school, was shot at least once in the chest. She was rushed to University Hospital, but died shortly before 10:00 a.m. Maldonado was also taken to University Hospital with a gunshot wound to his head. At last check, he remained on life support.
San Antonio Police Chief Bill McManus said the Meza and Maldonado had been in a 2-year relationship, which he described as "tumultuous." News 4 WOAI was told Meza broke off the relationship about a month ago. According to a police report, a witness told police Maldonado had been threatening Meza and had even called her the Thursday night and said he was going to do something to her.
