Bakersfield, CA -- A husband and wife are dead in what is apparently a murder-suicide at the couple's home on the 15 thousand block of
Redwood Springs. The home is in a private gated community.
Shortly before 4pm a 14-year-old boy heard several gunshots and ran inside the home.
Sheriff's investigators say the boy found a man dead with a gunshot wound to the head. The man's wife had several gunshots and was initially taken to Mercy Southwest hospital and then to Kern Medical Center where she died.
Neighbors in the tight knit community were visibly shaken by the incident and were hugging members of the dead couple.
The California Department of Corrections identified the couple as
Angel Santa Cruz, a veteran of the department with a rank of Captain. The wife is identified as Andrea Plaza Santa Cruz also a correctional officer, but CDC could not say how long she was employed there.
Both worked at Wasco State Prison. The prison was put on lock down after the shooting and remained on lock down status into the evening.
Sheriff's investigators say it does not appear any one else was inside
the home when the shooting happened. No motive for the shooting is yet known.
