SUNBURY — A 30-year-old Weatherly man jumped head-first through a closed window and fell 16 stories to his death at the Riverfront Apartments on Saturday night.

The suicide occurred just after Jeffrey J. Oliver assaulted his girlfriend, according to Sunbury police.

Cpl. Michael Miller and Officer Jamie L. Quinn said Oliver and his girlfriend, whom they did not identify, had an argument, after which she told him to pack his belongings and leave by Sunday.

“He severely assaulted the girlfriend before turning from her and jumping head-first through a closed window,” Miller and Quinn reported.

Oliver was temporarily staying at the apartment. The girlfriend’s mother is the actual tenant of the apartment, which is on the top floor of the building.

Police were summoned to the apartment building, along Front Street, at 12:01 a.m. Oliver’s body was found in a grassy area on the south side of the building.

He was pronounced dead by Northumberland County Deputy Coroner James Gotlob at 12:20 a.m. Deputy Coroner Barry Leisenring, personnel from Medic 49, Northumberland and Point Township police, and Sunbury fire chiefs also responded.

Oliver and his girlfriend were alone in the apartment at the time of the argument, police said. The girlfriend was treated at Sunbury Community Hospital and released, Quinn said.

Police said the investigation, including toxicology tests on Oliver, will continue.

Northumberland County District Attorney Tony Rosini has also been notified.
