Man Tells Girlfriend She Would Be Better Off Without Him

Nathan Havens, senior at Teague High School, spent part of his winter break attending the Christmas Classic Debate Tournament at Rice High School that was held on Saturday, December 17, 2011. He participated in LD (Lincoln-Douglas Debate) and took first place overall in the LD portion of the tournament. The contest included participants from Rice, Mildred, Waxahachie, Paris, Meridian, Fruitvale, and more. The debate topic was: Resolved: Capital punishment in Texas is unjust.
A 30-year old Livingston, Texas man took his own life on Thursday evening, December 29th in southern Freestone County as he deliberately walked out into traffic on Interstate 45 after telling his girlfriend "she would be better off without him."
Dead is Jason Hall, who according to reports stepped from the passenger door of a 2003 Honda 4-door automobile, which was parked on the improved shoulder of I-45, made the comment to his girlfriend, walked to the front of the car, and started walking directly into the traffic lane of I-45 and into the path of oncoming traffic.
Deputies and DPS responded to the scene as soon as the first 9-1-1 call came in from the girlfriend of the struck pedestrian at 7:11 p.m. Another call immediately followed from a passenger of the vehicle, which had struck Hall.
Upon arrival by officers and FSO investigator Jeremy Shipley, it was determined that this was an intentional act by the pedestrian, rather than an accident.
Hall was struck by a northbound Ford pick-up truck driven by a man and wife from Midlothian, Texas.
According to FSO reports, evidence found at the scene indicates that Mr. Hall may have been intoxicated, as well as despondent.
Justice of the Peace Deborah Hamilton, Precinct 2, pronounced Hall dead at the scene and an autopsy was ordered. Bowers Funeral Home of Teague removed the body.
