COEUR D'ALENE, Id -- A North Idaho man recently charged with trying to kill his wife killed himself this morning after holding his wife at gunpoint.
Kootenai County Sheriff's Major Ben Wolfinger says Daniel Zehm was armed and holding his wife at gunpoint in their van. He led police on a chase and she was able to jump out of the van. Deputies used spike strips to stop Zehm; he shot and killed himself before deputies could bring him into custody.
The incident shut down the intersection of Sherman Avenue and Coeur d'Alene Lake Drive for several hours early Sunday morning.
Zehm was arrested in late November when police say he was upset with his wife and tried to set her on fire. They allege he doused her with gasoline, then repeatedly flicked a lighter nearby. He was charged with burglary and battery and posted bond on November 21st. Seven days later, he was charged with violating a no-contact order, stating he was not allowed within 300 feet of his wife. She filed for divorce on December 7th.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
