A Lake Havasu City police officer shot a man at about 2:48 a.m. Wednesday outside a residence in the 3700 block of Lost Dutchman Drive, according to Lake Havasu City Police Department officials.
Police responded to the residence after a woman called 911 stating her boyfriend, later identified as Danny Haskell, 39, of Havasu, had a gun to his own head threatening to shoot himself. The woman told dispatchers Haskell also said he also was going to kill children within the residence.
Haskell fired one round while police were en route to the scene.
Officers arrived within three minutes after dispatched and heard screaming coming from within the residence. When Haskell exited the residence armed with a handgun, Officer Gregory Melodia, on officer on scene, took immediate action and fired his duty weapon. Haskell was pronounced dead at the scene.
Initial investigations determined 11 people were in the residence. All responding officers and 11 individuals were unharmed.
Kingman Police Department detectives responded to conduct an investigation.
Melodia, a 12-year law enforcement veteran with the local department, has been placed on routine administrative leave.
The investigation continues and additional information will be provided as it becomes available, police said.
