A Holmes County man died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound Monday after reportedly stabbing his wife, who is being treated at a Jackson hospital.
Irma Nichols, was listed in good condition Monday at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, said Patrice Guilfoyle, hospital spokeswoman.
Holmes County Sheriff Willie March identified her husband as Reford Nichols, 48, of Pickens.
Irma Nichols is a faculty member at J.J. McClain Middle School in Lexington, according to the school's website.
Her husband was pronounced dead of one shot to the head around 5 a.m. Monday on Gas Plant Road in Pickens, said Yazoo County Coroner Ricky Shivers.
"This was an attempted homicide/suicide," Shivers said. "The suicide was successful."
