A 36-year-old man apparently shot himself to death after he walked into a Chicago Lawn barbershop and opened fire on a female barber as she was giving a man a hair cut, killing her, officials said.
The shooting happened at 11:18 a.m. at Lupe's barbershop, 3153 W. 59th St., police said.
The man was identified as Juan Martinez, of the 2100 block of West Ohio St., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
Officials were not releasing the woman's name pending notification of her family. The woman, who is in her 30s, was pronounced dead at 11:55 a.m. at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, officials said.
Police said Martinez walked into the barbershop where the woman was working as a barber and shot her once before turning the gun on himself and firing, police said.
According to a man who answered the telephone at the barbershop, the woman was with a client cutting his hair when the woman's boyfriend walked in and shot her before shooting himself. The male client was not injured.
The man, who did not give his name, said the boyfriend was jealous of the woman and they had previously had a quarrel. He said the woman had three children, a boy and two girls.
Later in the evening the shop closed up and inside someone had left behind three lit religious candles.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
