MONTEREY, Tenn. -- Larry Lane can't believe what happened next door to his Monterey home.
"You don't know what makes anybody snap and do something like that," he said. "I just heard the gunfire. Four times I'm pretty sure is what it was."
Those shots came from the home of 47-year-old Richard Mackie.
What Larry Lane only heard from his garage, Larry Pryor saw happen. It was a fight between Mackie and 31-year-old Aundria Padgett.
"He grabbed her by the hair of the head and dragged her to the porch and went like that, and turn around, and 'bang,'" Pryor said. "[He] shot her, turned around and shot her again."
Within minutes, sheriff's deputies and a SWAT team arrived.
They found Padgett dead on the front porch, and no sign of Mackie.
"I think they thought he was still in there with the gun," Lane said.
After more than an hour of trying to contact Richard Mackie, officers went inside. Mackie was dead.
"I just can't believe it," Pryor said. "I can't believe it happened here."
Aundria Padgett had several children. Putnam County Sheriff David Andrews said they were not in the home at the time of the shooting, and are safe with family members.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
