Kyle Hicke More Details
JANESVILLE, Wis. -- There will be no trial for the Milton man who gunned down his ex-girlfriend then led police on a 90 mph high-speed pursuit through Rock County.
Kyle Hicke, 38, changed his first-degree intentional homicide plea to guilty on Monday before a Rock County Judge.
As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors dropped the charges of possession of a firearm by a felon, first-degree reckless endangerment and attempting to flee from an officer.
According to the criminal complaint, Hicke went to Erica Ostenson's house last April to "say good-bye" and make peace over their breakup.
Police said the two argued and Hicke hit Ostenson repeatedly then shot her right in front of her 5-year-old son.
Hicke told police he pulled the trigger of a semi-automatic handgun until it stopped making a sound.
Hicke's plea carries a mandatory life sentence.
"I am satisfied that the sentence he will receive will be appropriate based on the facts we had," said Rock County District Attorney David O'Leary. "We had overwhelming evidence in the case."
Hicke will be sentenced April 14. His defense could argue for a lesser life sentence based on his willingness to cooperate and plead guilty.
"They can argue for an earlier out date, that's their option," said O'Leary. "We'll be arguing he should be locked up for the rest of his life."
