GARY, Ind. — A man ending a visit with his 19-month-old daughter shot her in the chest, killing her, before turning the gun on himself, police said Friday.
Eboni Richardson, was pronounced dead Thursday evening at Methodist Hospital, following the shooting in a restaurant parking lot near the U.S. Steel Yard baseball stadium, authorities said.
Cordell Richardson, 20, shot himself in the head and was being treated Friday in the hospital's neurointensive care unit in Merrillville, Gary Police Department spokeswoman Cpl. Gabrielle King said. He was unable to speak Friday but able to blink his eyes, she said.
Investigators did not know the motive for the shootings, King said.
"He's probably the only person who could tell us why," she said.
Detectives were interviewing witnesses and family members and were expected to meet with prosecutors later Friday to discuss criminal charges, King said.
Richardson was ending visitation with his daughter and had gone to meet a relative who was going to drop the girl off with her mother, she said.
"There was no mention of a gun or anything until it just jumped off," King said.
