9 years in prison for NJ cop who killed wife

BRIDGETON, N.J. - A southern New Jersey police officer who said he "lost it" and gunned down his wife during an argument in their home has been sentenced to nine years in state prison.

Former Millville police Sgt. Robert Vanaman was ordered Friday to serve eight years for manslaughter and another year for evidence tampering. He had pleaded guilty to those charges March 31, just days before his murder trial was to start.

Vanaman initially claimed he had acted in self-defense after his wife grabbed a knife and came at him in a threatening manner.

But he later admitted he shot his wife Barbara twice as they argued about their crumbling marriage. Vanaman also said he cut himself with a knife in an attempt to fool detectives into thinking she had attacked him.
