A mother and her two teenage children were fatally shot in their Lawrence apartment this morning, police said.
Milka Rivera, 39, and her son, Max Ariel Montanez, 16, and daughter Sachary Montanez, 19, were found dead inside a bedroom at the 15 Maginnis Ave. apartment building shortly after 2 a.m.
Jose Luis Tejada, 40, the boyfriend of Milka Rivera, was taken into custody for the murders and will be arraigned tomorrow in Lawrence District Court, authorities said.
Around 2 a.m., police received a call from a man who had encountered Tejada outside the apartment, Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett said this morning.
Tejada allegedly told the man, “I may have committed a crime.”
The witness said Tejada appeared nervous and agitated.
When police arrived at the apartment, they found the doors locked but the upstairs light on. All three bodies were found in the son’s bedroom.
Police located a gun near the home and are testing it for ballistics.
Tejada lived in the same apartment complex where the murders were committed, and authorities believe he had a five or six year relationship with Rivera. He was not the father of her children.
There were no previous incidents at the address, authorities said. Tejada has no criminal record, but police would not comment on whether he was in the United States illegally. There was no restraining order against Tejada.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
