GEORGIANA, AL (WSFA) - The Butler County Sheriff's Department is working its first death investigations of 2011 following an apparent murder-suicide. Sheriff's deputies say what appears to be a domestic situation escalated out of control in the small town of Georgiana.
According to authorities, a call came in to the Butler County Sheriff's Department around 11:00 this morning saying a man had been shot and killed and a woman had been badly beaten.
When deputies responded to the call on Rocky Lane just north of Georgiana they found 76-year-old Corrections Officer Willie Hall dead of a gunshot wound and a 55-year-old woman suffering from several blows to the head.
The woman was able to detail the attack and gave deputies the suspect's name. When deputies arrived at the suspect's home they found him dead in the yard of what they believe to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Authorities believe that this was a domestic dispute that turned violent. Butler County Sheriff Kenny Harden says the suspect was the injured woman's ex-boyfriend.
The woman was transferred to a Montgomery hospital for treatment. She is expected to be OK.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
