Montgomery, AL: Woman killed after ongoing dispute

BY TERI GREENE • JUNE 7, 2010

A Montgomery man is facing murder charges after he allegedly shot and killed his wife Saturday after what is believed to have been a domestic dispute, according to Montgomery Police Lt. Mark Drinkard.

Montgomery Police said 54-year-old Willie Young is accused of shooting his wife, Leona Henderson Young, 32, about 9 p.m. Saturday at the couple’s home in the 700 block of Hamner Street in Montgomery.

Leona Young’s sister, who lived with the couple, found the victim lying near the home and called 911.

Upon arrival, patrol units found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Medics responded and pronounced her dead on the scene.

Drinkard said the killing marked the end of what neighbors and family members of the Youngs described as an extended domestic situation.

“From our understanding, they had an ongoing argument all day long over the fact that she was going to leave him,” Drinkard said of the couple. “I guess it came to a head when he (Willie Young) went to somebody’s car and got a shotgun.”

The weapon used was a 12-gauge shotgun, said Drinkard, who added that Willie Young was under the influence of alcohol at the time.

Willie Young was taken into custody on the scene and is now in the Montgomery County Detention Facility. There is still no word on Young’s bail.

The slaying is Montgomery’s 13th homicide of 2010.
