WARREN — An investigation into the fate of a Warren couple found dead in a home near Toepfer and Mound by their son reportedly pointed to a case of murder-suicide, police officials confirmed on Jan. 7.

According to Warren Police Lt. Michael Torey, a 68-year-old woman and a 61-year-old man were found in their home in the 20000 block of Cyman at about 9:15 a.m. by their son, who hours earlier had received a troubling voicemail message.

“We got a call from a 30-year-old son who lives in Hazel Park. He apparently woke up this morning and had a voicemail message from 4 o’clock in the morning from his father,” Torey said. “The message was basically apologizing for his actions.”

Torey said the son had planned to go to the home to take his parents on errands. When he arrived he reportedly found the home locked.

“Upon entering he finds them unconscious, deceased on their bed in the bedroom. There’s a long gun next to the father,” Torey said.

Both the man and the woman had gunshot wounds to the head. Evidence at the scene led investigators to believe that the man shot his wife before shooting himself.

Both also had lacerations on their wrists.

“It looks like that was the first method. When that did not succeed, the evidence appears to show that she was shot once in the head and he was shot once in the head,” Torey said.

Investigators said no note was left at the scene.

The 61-year-old man was reportedly a retired Chrysler employee suffering from depression. The 68-year-old woman reportedly suffered from dementia.

The couple’s names were not immediately released by police.

“We are all saddened by the tragic death of this Warren couple. Our thoughts and prayers go out to their family and friends,” Warren Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer added in an official statement.
