Lawyers are expected to deliver their opening remarks Monday in the double homicide trial for Gregory Whiteside Jr. who is accused of slashing to death his estranged girlfriend and the couple's 18-month-old daughter more than a decade ago.
Jury selection in Whiteside's trial was completed Thursday, and 12 jurors and 6 alternates were sworn to hear the case in San Bernardino Superior Court, according to court records.
The bloody slaying on June 13, 1999 followed weeks of unusual behavior from Whiteside and warnings from 19-year-old Shawana Andrews to her family and friends that if she died, "you would know who did it," according to the victim's best friend.
Andrews suffered numerous gashes with a 6-inch kitchen knife, and her daughter Brittany's throat was slashed. Whiteside then attempted suicide, causing self-inflicted wounds to his wrists, according to police.
The couple and the baby were found lying in each other's arms in a pool of their blood on the garage floor of a three-unit apartment building in the 500 block of W. 13th Street, in San Bernardino. Authorities received the call at 7:43 p.m.
Deputy District Attorney Robert Bulloch is prosecuting the case, while Whiteside is being defended by lawyers Dale Atherton and John Roberts. The case is before Judge Brian McCarville.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
