The man accused of accidentally killing a 20-year-old woman in her Iowa City apartment last month will be arraigned later this month.
Alajuwon S. Johnson, a 26-year-old transient, is scheduled to be arraigned Jan. 21 on charges of involuntary manslaughter, controlled substance violation, possession of marijuana, carrying weapons and domestic assault.
The arraignment could be avoided if Johnson enters a written plea before the scheduled court date.
Police said Johnson went to visit Kylie Jo Perkins at her 1527 Aber Ave. No. 11 apartment on Dec. 30 while illegally carrying a Ruger 9 mm semi-automatic handgun. At some point, the two fought for possession of the handgun and it discharged, shooting Perkins in the chest and killing her, police said.
Police said Johnson told officers that Perkins requested an ambulance, but he wouldn’t call one directly because he had an outstanding misdemeanor warrant for his arrest. Instead, Johnson eventually asked a friend to call 911, police said. However, when the friend, under a fake name, called and gave inaccurate information, emergency responders were delayed in their response to the scene.
Johnson remains in the Johnson County Jail. Involuntary manslaughter is a class-D felony, punishable by up to five years in prison.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
