COVINA, Calif.—The Los Angeles County Sheriff's department says a man suspected of shooting his wife in the head shot and killed himself during an hours-long standoff with deputies.
Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore says the woman was shot and wounded multiple times in the head and shoulder in her apartment in Covina east of Los Angeles on Saturday morning and was airlifted to County-UCLA Medical Center. He describes her condition as stable and says it's "remarkable" that she survived.
Whitmore says deputies evacuated surrounding apartments and tried to contact the man for several hours.
He says a SWAT team entered the apartment at 3:30 p.m. and found the man dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The couple's names have not been released.
Covina is a suburb 25 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
