Cops in Terrebonne Parish say a man shot and killed his 2-year-old son and the little boy's mother Thursday afternoon.
"A boyfriend killed his girlfriend and their two-year-old baby here in Chauvin," Sheriff Vernon Bourgeois told WWL First News.
Deputies says the bodies were found inside a home on LA 56 in Chauvin.
Bourgeois said the suspect called a relative after the double murder. "He called his uncle who in turn called us at the Sheriff's office."
Cops fanned out in the region looking for the man's SUV.
"We found the vehicle and momentarily after that we found him in a house right by the vehicle," Bourgeois said.
The suspect is identified as 33-year-old Tyari Smith Sr. (right)
The victims are Tyari Smith Jr. and 27-year-old Marie Chavez. Two other children who were at school at the time of the crime. They are 5 and 7.
The couple was having trouble and Chavez was reportedly preparing to move back home to California.
The Sheriff said this is hard to handle for a number of reasons in a parish that usually only sees one or two murders in an entire year.
"Just the first week in the year and we have two and that is not a good thing," Bourgeois said.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
