A Baldwin man beat his girlfriend to death early this morning before taking his own life, Pittsburgh police said.
The girlfriend, Lillianya Rachko, 25, had been beaten with an aluminum baseball bat and was found lying in the basement of a house at 1423 Orangewood Street in Beechview, police said. She was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:53 a.m. She resided in the Pittsburgh area, officials said.
The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's office classified her death as a homicide.
Police initially were called after a 58-year-old woman contacted 911 at 12:31 a.m. to report her son was beating a woman with a bat. The son, William Murray, 38, then went upstairs to the kitchen and cut himself with a kitchen knife before fleeing in his 2004 Lexus to his home on Camarta Drive in Baldwin.
Murray's mother told police that her son and his girlfriend had been drinking in the basement family room. Then he struck her repeatedly in the head with the baseball bat.
Attempts to contact Murray at his home were unsuccessful, police said. SWAT officers forced their way inside shortly after 6 a.m. and found the Lexus in the garage with Murray slumped over dead.
Police said Murray killed himself by cutting himself again with a knife.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
