Fast Facts:
Police say a woman was found strangled to death in her front yard
Now her boyfriend has been charged with the crime
It happened in the 3300 block of flower valley in Raleigh
(Memphis 10/12/2009) Violence is no stranger to people who live on Raleigh Street.
"I hear gun shots out here pretty regular," said one neighbor.
Yet still, it's hard to imagine that the lifeless body of 28-year-old Ivory Calhoun was found lying in a front yard Friday at 8 am.
Police say they believe Calhoun's death was the result of an altercation Thursday night with her boyfriend, 30-year-old Leo Johnson. The police report says Johnson picked up Calhoun from her house and. They began to argue, so Calhoun called her roommate, Tanyon Foote, to come pick her up. Foote said Calhoun told her Johnson had jumped on her, pulled a gun and pointed at her head.
Foote and Calhoun drove home that evening and that was the last time Foote says she saw her roommate alive. She does say later that night the suspect, Leo Johnson was knocking on her door. Neighbors recognized his car.
"I do see them around every now and a then here," said another neighbor.
Calhoun was found dead the next morning. The medical examiner says that she died of strangulation. The police report says that Johnson denied having anything to do with Calhoun's death... It also says he had scratches on his body.
Johnson has been charged with first degree murder in connection to Calhoun's death. Neighbors are in disbelief that something like this can happen so close to home.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
