Trempealeau man kills himself after police enter house

A Trempealeau, Wis., man fatally shot himself Monday night while police were in his home investigating a domestic disturbance.

Jason D. Singkofer, 38, was alone in his bedroom at 11762 South St. in the Village of Trempealeau when police arrived at about 10:40 p.m. after receiving a complaint about an argument, according to police. Singkofer shot himself soon after officers arrived, police said.
Police were told Singkofer kept firearms in a bedroom safe, Trempealeau Police Chief Stanley Ridgeway said. When officers heard a single gunshot, they forced open the bedroom door and found Singkofer with a self-inflicted fatal gunshot wound.

Two juveniles were in the house at the time, Ridgeway said.

Trempealeau County Coroner Bonnie Kindschy pronounced Singkofer dead at the scene. His body was taken to the Minnesota Regional Coroner’s Office in Hastings, Minn.

Singkofer was involved in a standoff with police in 1998 in Bangor, Wis., according to previous Daily News reports. Armed with a shotgun, he broke into his girlfriend’s residence, refused to come out for about 45 minutes and threatened to shoot himself, according to previous reports. He was convicted of possession of a short-barreled shotgun, trespassing and obstructing an officer.

The Trempealeau County Sheriff’s Department and Galesville Police Department also responded to Monday’s incident.
