WEST BRANCH – A 39-year old West Branch man is accused of killing his girlfriend’s new puppy Monday, Johnson County deputies said.
According to a criminal report, following a possible animal abuse investigation, deputies said Chadwick D. Schultz, of 5535 340th St. NE, became involved in a heated argument with his girlfriend at 9 p.m. at this address when she locked herself in the bathroom, only to hear her seven week old Old English Mastiff puppy yelping in pain.
The report indicated the puppy yelped for a few more seconds before he was killed by Schultz. His girlfriend told deputies when she came out of the bathroom she found her puppy, a Christmas gift from her brother, dead on the floor, next to Schultz.
Deputies reported Schultz was “highly agitated” during the argument, and when his girlfriend yelled at him he responded, “It was an accident.”
Schultz was arrested Friday and is being held at the Johnson County Jail on $2,500 cash bond for intentionally killing an animal owned by another person, an aggravated misdemeanor, according to the Johnson County Jail.
The puppy, weighing approximately 14 pounds, was reportedly “healthy, sturdy and happy.”
Deputies, who did not have any further information Saturday, received the report from the Department of Human Services.
