CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A 26-year-old man broke into the home of his estranged wife's parents and shot both of them, killing her father, who was a former Cleveland police officer.
Police said after he shot his in-laws, Aaron Starr shot himself in the head. He is in critical condition at MetroHealth Medical Center.
Kathleen Bulkowski, 49, was in fair condition with a gunshot wound of the leg.
James Bulkowski, 51, was a Cleveland patrol officer from June 15, 1981, until his resignation on Sept. 3, 1992. He lived on West 197th Street, where the shooting occurred, and died at the hospital following the shooting.
Starr's wife and two children and another man were in the house at the time of the shooting, but were not harmed. Their names were not released.
Police were called at 2:19 a.m. today for a domestic violence incident at a home in the 4700 block of West 197th Street.
The dispatcher said she could hear gunshots while on the phone with the caller.
When police arrived, they heard a single shot from the garage of the house.Police went inside the home and found James and Kathleen Bulkowski with gunshot wounds.
James Bulkowski was shot in the chest and later died from his wounds. His wife was shot in the leg.
Police found Starr in the garage with an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was unresponsive.
Police said a preliminary investigation indicates that Starr went to the Bulkowski house to confront his estranged wife, who had been living with her parents.
"The suspect broke into his estranged wife's parents' home and started shooting," said a news release. "The suspect shot his wife's mother in the leg and her father in the chest."
The man went into the garage and shot himself in the head as police pulled up to the house, the report said.
