A La Crosse man who killed his then-girlfriend's 6.4-pound puppy was spared jail time today and placed on two years of probation.
Eric Mientus, 23, must also serve 50 hours of community service and cannot own pets while on probation under the sentence handed down by La Crosse County Circuit Judge Dale Pasell.
Mientus pleaded no contest today to reduced charges of misdemeanor mistreating animals and disorderly conduct in the Nov. 30, 2009, death of Kami, a 4½-month-old teddy bear puppy.
"I still can't look at another dog without getting upset and wanting Kami back," said her owner, Alyssa Schulist.
A necropsy determined the puppy died of head and lung injuries, though she also had multiple rib fractures, severe chest trauma, internal and external bruising.
