NASHVILLE, Ind. (AP) — A central Indiana woman has pleaded guilty but mentally ill to charges that she set fire to her estranged husband's home, then fatally shot him as he slept.
A Brown County judge accepted the guilty plea Wednesday from Dottie Andrews on felony charges of voluntary manslaughter and arson. Prosecutors dropped murder charges against her in the plea agreement.
Authorities say that last June she broke into the home of 44-year-old Robert Andrews near the town of Helmsburg, then set fire to the garage and shot him and his dog in his bedroom.
She told police she meant to kill herself, but the handgun jammed.
The plea agreement calls for Andrews to face between 30 years and 45 years in prison. Her sentencing hearing was set for May 11.
