Despondent over a pending divorce, a Hollywood man shot and killed his sister-in-law late Sunday before turning the gun on himself in front of his home, Hollywood police said.
The man, Zacaria Fernandez, 40, shot and killed Yvonne Magdalena Rios, 39, who had accompanied her sister, Grace Rios Fernandez, to the home with the couple's 5-year-old son.
It's unclear why the estranged wife visited the home, but the couple was in the process of getting a divorce, said Raelin Storey, a spokeswoman for the city of Hollywood.
When the two women and young boy arrived by car shortly before 6 p.m., Fernandez confronted them. An argument erupted. Zacaria Fernandez's wife then fled in the car with her son after the man took out a gun and began firing shots. Her sister was left behind in the driveway with Fernandez.
Fernandez fired several shots at the car and shot Rios multiple times before fatally shooting himself.
Rios was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, where she later died.
The apparent murder-suicide took place in the driveway of Fernandez's home in the 200 block of Northwest 66th Terrace.
The couple's other son, a 9-year-old, was at home at the time of the shooting. He was not harmed, police said.
