BELLINGHAM, Wash. —
A man who was convicted of murdering his wife, although her body has never been found, was given the maximum 45-year prison sentence in Bellingham.

The Whatcom County prosecutor had offered to recommend the 34-year minimum term for 67-year-old Bruce Hummel if he would tell where to find the remains of his wife Alice.

The Bellingham Herald reports Hummel would not plea bargain Tuesday because he maintains he is innocent and plans to appeal.

Hummel was convicted in August. The prosecutor says Hummel killed his wife after she accused him of molesting one of their daughters.

He was brought back to Bellingham from a prison in Minnesota, where he was serving a federal sentence for cashing Alice Hummel's disability checks.
