Cherokee County, GA: Boyfriend charged in murder of Cherokee County woman

CHEROKEE COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

A man accused of shooting his girlfriend five times and then leaving her to die at a Canton home was arrested and charged in her murder.

Cherokee sheriff's deputies responded to the home on Pearidge Road at approximately 12:46 a.m. Sunday on a report of a person shot. Officers found Dejanirra Elrod, 19, in the doorway of the home with five gunshot wounds. She was taken to Kennestone Hospital, where she died from her injuries, police said.

There were no witnesses to the shooting, but investigators determined that Elrod's boyfriend, Trevor Nuckles, 21, had been with her at the home and knocked her phone from her hand when she tried to call 911. Nuckles fled the scene on foot.

Deputies issued a lookout for the suspect and a Canton police officer spotted Nuckles walking near the River Ridge Apartments off Reinhardt College Parkway when he lived with the victim.

The suspect was taken into custody and is being questioned by Cherokee Sheriff's Office investigators.

Investigators searched the woods in the area between the crime scene and where Nuckles was located with the help of the Cobb County Sheriff's Office K-9 Team. Police found a 9mm handgun believed to used in the crime in the woods about 50 yards from the murder scene.

Nuckles was charged with murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and obstruction of a 911 call. He is currently being held at the Cherokee Adult Detention Center.
