WETUMPKA, Ala. (AP) - The sheriff of Elmore County says officers stormed a home where a 17-year-old girl was being held hostage in hopes of rescuing her - though she ended up being shot and killed by her ex-boyfriend.

Sheriff Bill Franklin says authorities used stun grenades in the failed rescue attempt Thursday in Wetumpka. He says their priority was to get 17-year-old high school senior Haley Wingard out of the home alive.

Instead, police say Wingard was shot by her ex-boyfriend, 25-year-old Derrick Bean. He also died from multiple gunshots fired by a special operations team.

Franklin says officers stormed the house after trying to negotiate Wingard's release for several hours. The couple had broken up earlier in the week and Wingard had filed a domestic violence complaint.
