A homicide investigation is underway after a deadly shooting in Montgomery County.
Anthony Shouse was pronounced dead at St. Joseph Hospital in Mt. Sterling Monday night. His wife, Debbie, is accused of shooting him. She was also taken to the hospital to be treated for anxiety.
Around 3:30 Monday afternoon, investigators responded to the couple's home on Norman Road in Jeffersonville to find Shouse severely wounded from a gunshot wound. Friends and family are claiming Debbie Shouse shot her husband as an act of self defense.
As much of a shock as it may be to hear gunshots and see police cars
filling your street, some friends and family members close to Debbie
and Anthony Shouse say they're surprised this didn't happen years ago.
"Just like any dog that's been backed into a corner and beaten for so long, eventually that dog's going to come out and bite you," Debbie's sister, Diane Willoughby, said.
Willoughby says Debbie had suffered from domestic abuse by her husband for nearly 20 years. Montgomery County Sheriff Fred Shortridge tells 27 NEWSFIRST Debbie Shouse had filed a domestic violence order in the past. "There was domestic violence a couple of years ago, which has already expired, but yeah, we have been here before, yes," Shortridge said.
For the past few years the married couple had lived in separate homes
side by side, but the neighborhood was familiar with a pattern of violence.
Family friend Steven Watkins was next door the moment that violence peaked. "We heard one shot. As I opened the door, Deb was running down the edge of the grass hollering, 'Help me, Steve.
Help me. He's tried to kill me. I've shot him,'" Watkins said.
Willoughby, who also lives down the road, found Anthony Shouse on the floor of Debbie's home. She and Watkins and others tried to help him while they waited for help to arrive.
The Montgomery County Sheriff says once Debbie Shouse is released from the hospital, he expects her to be free from custody while the
investigation continues.
When asked about possible charges in the case, investigators would
only say they intend to present their findings to the Montgomery
County Grand Jury. It in the meantime, they want to wait to make a judgment.
