GRAND HAVEN, Mich. – Monday saw sentencing for William Masselink who pleaded guilty in June to involuntary manslaughter and second degree vulnerable adult abuse in the death of his girlfriend.
Masselink was sentenced to two and a half to fifteen years in prison for involuntary manslaughter. He also faces prison time for the charge of second degree vulnerable adult abuse.
Amber Carey had multiple sclerosis and Masselink was supposed to be her caretaker. Before the judge delivered the sentence, Masselink heard from the victim's mother.
Newschannel 3 was there for the emotional day in court.
Amber Carey's family says they weren't allowed to see her, that Masselink wouldn't allow them. Masselink's attorney says that is simply not true and that Amber wanted to be right where she was, with Masselink.
With her voice and body shaking, Carey's mother, Joyce Carey, addressed the court.
“Words can't express the hurt, pain and agony for what Bill did to my daughter,” said Joyce.
Joyce says her daughter weighed just 80 pounds when she last saw her. She says Masselink, who was supposed to be taking care of Amber, instead was letting her die, and keeping her captive from her family.
“He starved her to death,” said Joyce. “She died because he abused and neglected her.”
Masselink's attorney says his client was doing the best he could to care for Amber around the clock. Masselink himself also spoke before the sentencing.
“I loved Amber,” said Masselink. “I never did anything to hurt her. I apologize to the family if they hate me, I loved her to death.”
Masselink's attorney says Amber was afraid she'd be put in a nursing home and she didn't want to go.
