A Jacksonville man has been charged with murder in the 2009 death of his girlfriend, who died four years after he left her a quadriplegic.
Willie Anzer Spicer, 49, of the 1800 block of West 13th Street is charged in the death of Leslie Crankfield Hatten, 49.
An arrest report said that Spicer and Hatten got into an argument in a North Jacksonville home in July 2005. He picked Hatten up and threw her on her head, severing her spinal cord.
The report said that Spicer left Hatten behind a couch for a brief period, then moved her onto the couch and eventually into their bedroom, where he covered her paralyzed body with a sheet.
Two of Hatten's sisters later found her on the bed and took her to the hospital, where doctors determined her injuries left her a quadriplegic.
Spicer pleaded guilty to felony battery and was sentenced to 30 months in prison.
Hatten died last November of complications from the injuries caused in 2005, the arrest report said. Police renewed their investigation, leading to the murder charge against Spicer. He is being held in the Duval County jail without bail.
