It didn't take long for police to decide that they thought Owen Walker was telling the truth. Inside the apartment Danielle Knarr was dead. Walker said he stabbed her.
Their two children were in the apartment when it happened, although police haven't said if they were awake. That didn't matter to Danielle's neighbor, Tammy Wainwright, who couldn't stop thinking about the young children.
"I was kind of in tears thinking those kids will grow up without their mother, without really knowing her. It's just heartbreaking," Wainwright said.
Tammy and other neighbors tell Newschannel 3 that Danielle and Owen Walker never made much noise, but court records tell a different story.
Newschannel 3 has learned that Danielle had a protective order taken out against Walker back in October of 2008. It was set to expire in October of this year. Still, Tammy Wainwright said from the outside looking in, you would never know there was trouble.
"They seemed like a regular happy couple. I never heard them arguing."
"The only way you would know something went wrong is the single bouquet of flowers in front of the apartment building. Most of Danielle's neighbors say they didn't know her that well - she just moved in about a year ago. Still they are very sorry, especially for the children.
"No matter how many times you hear about it it upsets you."
Walker is now in the Hampton Roads Regional Jail and is charged with murder. According to police Danielle Knarr's children are with family. Tammy wainwright is left thinking about how much Knarr really knew about the father of her children.
"It's sad. It makes you wonder who are you really with? Who really is your mate. It just blows my mind."
